Clinical Studies of Diabetes Mellitus Associated with Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Abstract
Clinical studies of forty patients of diabetes mellitus associated with pulmonary tuberculosis were carried out.
The studied cases involved those who were hospitalized in the Department Medicine, Busan National University Hospital from the period of Jannuary 1966 to August 1975.
1. The peak age was from 51 to 60 (37.5%) and then from 6170 (27.5%). Male ratio was superior to female (92.5%).
2. Clinical pictures on admission in order of frequency were thirst (57.5%). polyuria (55. 0%), weakess (52.50), cough (47.50), mild fever (32.5%), hemoptysis (32.50), weight .loss (27.5%), dyspnea (27.50), and polyphagia (7.5%).
3. In chest X-ray studies on admission, the far advanced case showed 47.5%, moderate 27. 5% and minimal 25%. The positive AFB stain of sputum was proved in 52.5% of cases examined.
4. Fasting blood suger ranging above 221 mg% was observed in 72.50, 171^220 mg/0/6 in 10.0%, and 121170 mg% in.17.5% of cases.
5. Glycosuria was more than moderately positive in 87.5% and proteinuria noted in 42.5%.

6. Chemical liver function test revealed decrease in total serum protein in 32.5%, decrease

in albumin in 67.5%, and increase in globulin in 70.0% of the cases respectively.
Also the abnormal values were observed with T.T.T. in 27.5%, C.C.F. in 9.5%, serum
Takata reaction in 25.0%. and G.O.T., G.P.T. in 30.0961 in all cases studies
7. In all cases studied, diabetes mellitus followed by pulmonary tuberculosis. In 32.5% of cases, the former developed in a period of over 5 years.
8. There seems to be no relationship between the severity of pulmonary tuberculosis on admission and the blood sugar level.
9. There was no difficulty in regulating the sugar level of the diabetes mellitus with pulmonary tuberculosis compared to those with diabetes mellitus alone.
10. The complication of diabetes mellitus were diabetes retinopathy (32.5%), neuropathy (10.0;0), cataracK7.5,06), nephropathy(5.0%), hypertension(5.0%) and diabetic coma(2.5%).
11. The fatality rate was 5%. The causes of death were air way obstruction secondary to hemoptysis and diabetic coma.
